AGRO TOURISM UNIT

1996 - Enterprise - Eco Tourist Project

Recently completed a 10-room Tourism and Hospitality / Accommodation Centre with conference facilities.   As an income generating exercise, this project proposes to employ close to twenty-four - (24) individuals directly and many more indirectly.  -  Assisted by UNDP - GEF Small Grants and CANARI; JB Fernandes Memorial Trust in the construction stages and Toco Foundation’s efforts at fund raising.

 

1996 - Agriculture: Young Farmers Project

The Young Farmers Project (YFP) was initiated in 1994 and was aimed initially at young farmers in the Cumana area who were already involved in agriculture. The focus was on providing equipment and know-how to enable them to increase production capacity and orient their production along commercial lines. The YFP has subsequently directed its attention more towards organic farming and animal husbandry. Has completed the building structure for a Farmer's Training Institute and Wild Life Centre – Assisted by JB Fernandes Memorial Trust; Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) Telefood Project, as well as, the Ministry of Agriculture Land and Marine Resources and the University of the West Indies Agricultural Science Department.

 

1998 - Biodiversity Conservation Programme; Turtle/ Wildlife Protection –    Toco Turtle Protection Programme

Consolidating and expanding the Toco Turtle Protection Programme to include the Howler monkey protection in designated inland areas in the North East coast. - Assisted by CANARI and the British High Commission.  It is moving slowly.
