Turtle Crown Press announces the Caribbean release of yet another literary work by author Michael Als. It is the telling pre-independence anecdotes placed in a two part paperback edition called ‘Children’s Feet’. This is the third novel by the author in recent years. It follows on the heels of the dramatic novel, ‘The Underclass’.

‘Children’s Feet’ is a radical departure from his previous works, a different genre using sociological underpinnings instead of surrealistic social expressions. He codifies his work this time by placing keen emphasis on landscape reality in the town and district of St. Joseph in pre-independence Trinidad.

The novel is a series of tales told about and by a group of young boys; viewing the emerging society from bottoms up. It is literary experiment few could attempt successfully, but Als does this with grace and ease, leaving charm and concern on every page.

In presenting the stories he gives two introductory commentaries. One entitled ‘The Hills’ and the other ‘St. Joseph’. These precede the first story ‘The Spiral Mosque’. Race, class and social positioning provided in skin tone and religion give the impression that society is holding its breath. It must either come to terms with its reality or face, perhaps stagnation and disintegration.

Michael Als literary productions seem to be flowing now since his sojourn / escape in the Toco region where he lives and writes. In the last three years he has released: The Underclass (Starapple); Manchild (New Voices) and Children’s Feet (Turtle Crown Press) with clear indications of more to come. His writing proves he has a keen insight into the Trinidadian psyche and the Caribbean make up.

The latest novel presented in pastel colour cover is beautifully bounded with four illustrations and imprinted with feet stepping through the pages. It will be released shortly by Turtle Crown Press and will be available in local and Caribbean bookshops. Purchase will also be available via the internet.
